Hearts and Minds Campaign We want to build a fan base for escape rooms. The industry is not a competitive one. Once people have done an escape room they do not return so there is no ongoing struggle to retain customers. The only important thing is that customers have a great time. If customers have fun at our rooms they will do others and if they have fun at others they will come to ours. That is why it is important to protect first-time participants in escape rooms and ensure they have a fantastic time and become fans. The larger the fan base the more we can invest in building bigger and better rooms.
Legitimise the industry There are no insurance policies for escape rooms. We still field calls from people wondering what an escape room is. Our quest is to make escape rooms a household name, synonymous with paintball and go-karts. To get there we need $250k-$500k worth of insurance premiums available to an insurer to make it worth their while. So it is in the interests of everyone involved in escape room entertainment that we grow the industry together. Safety first design is just as important. Currently there is no governing safety code or good practice guide for escape rooms. We are campaigning to see a basic safety code that outlines there bare minimum an escape room should have as well as a good practice guide for both existing rooms and new up-and-coming escape rooms. This will aid construction, ensure customer safety and ultimately protect the industry from a public backlash should someone be hurt or seriously injured in an escape room.
Innovate beyond the status quo We envisage escape rooms going beyond the traditional padlock and combo lock setup and into a cinematic experience where customers are placed on a movie set and interact with it to progress through whatever scenario it may be. Once we can build a large enough fan base and attract investment, as well as legitimise the industry to obtain better insurance cover and lower the risks we can innovate into rooms that are the culmination of set designers, stunt directors and special effects technicians.

The DirectorAndrew Ferguson is the director of Escape Room Games Pty Ltd.
He has two years experience in Computer Systems Engineering and Computer Science at RMIT, a degree in Commerce majoring in Finance and a Bachelor of Laws. In 2013 he graduated the Leo Cussen Center for Law and was admitted to legal practice.
During his time studying he spent a year working in the deserts of Western Australia as a drillers assistant and has spent several years travelling to destinations abroad.
His first encounter with escape rooms came in Malaysia 2014 when he was blindfolded and handcuffed to a desk and made to escape.
After coming back to Australia in June 2015 he went on to start construction of Escape Room Geelong - The Mad Scientist which opened on 3 December 2015 and has been humbled by generous reviews.
He thanks his family and friends for their support and hopes to continue his work building escape rooms and raising the profile of escape room entertainment with Escape Room Games Pty Ltd.
